FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

H. M. Corwin received a message last Friday advising him of the death of his brother, Fred Corwin, whose home was near Seattle, Washington. The deceased lived in this vicinity several years ago and will be remembered by many of the older residents.

He was the son of Isaac Tracy Corwin (1827-1898) of Rock Valley. Isaac’s obituary (posted separately) says he raised sheep on 1400 acres adjoining Rock Valley; married Sarah June Davis (1833-1928); had children Howard (born 1856), Elmer (1861), Ella (1863), Fred (1868) and Nettie (1870). His wife’s obituary (as Sarah Jane Corwin) says her son Fred was living in Puyallup, Washington.

A Washington Select Death Certificates database on Ancestry.com has Fred W. Corwin, born about 1868, died 28 Nov 1930 at Puyallup, Washington; parents Isaac Corwin and Sarah J. Davis; spouse Grace Corwin.

FindaGrave.com has Fred W. Corwin, born 3 Oct 1868 in Black Hawk County, Iowa; died 28 Nov 1930 in Pierce County, Washington, buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Puyallup; parents and four siblings listed, but no wife or children.

The 1900 U.S. census for Chapelle Township, Hyde County, South Dakota shows Fred Corwin, age 31, born Oct. 1868 in Iowa, a stock raiser; his widowed mother, Sahra [i.e., Sarah] Jane Corwin; and three farmhands.

The 1910 U.S. census shows him and his family living in Puyallup, Washington: Fred W. Corwin, age 40, a fruit farmer, married 7 years; wife Grace, age 30, born in Illinois, a teacher; daughter Winifred, age 6, born in South Dakota; son Chester, age 4, born in Washington.

The 1920 census shows the family in Puyallup with the addition of a daughter, Beatrice E., age 3 years 2 months; he is a general farmer.

In the 1930 census he (as F. W.) is living with Grace, a voice teacher, daughter Winifred (26), a music teacher, and 13-year-old daughter Betty. Chester H. Corwin (24) and his wife Mazie (23) live next door. F. W. owns his property, valued at $20,000, and he and Chester are ranchers.
