From the Sioux County Index (Hull), August 14, 1947:

MR. KIRK C. SHELDON PASSED AWAY AUG. 9
Sudden Death of Hull’s Mayor Early Saturday Morning Stuns All of the Town’s Citizens

The sad news was quickly spread throughout the entire town last Saturday morning when it became known that Mr. K. C. Sheldon had passed away suddenly between four and five o’clock that morning. Apparently in his usual good health the day before, the sudden passing of this likeable man came as a severe shock to family and many, many friends.

“Kirk,” as he was known by one and all, had during his lifetime, almost all of which was spent in Hull and immediate vicinity, made and kept many true and trusty friends. Always active, he had energetically taken part in civic, social and religious activities in the community. At the time of his passing, besides being Mayor of our town, he was working to the utmost of his ability on a weed eradication program for the county, being designated as Weed Commissioner for Sioux County.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, from the home and from the American Reformed Church. Interment was in Hope cemetery. The Rev. Jones, pastor of the Methodist Church of Rock Valley, was in charge of the services. Music for the services was furnished by Miss Esther Moss, Mrs. James Hymans and Messrs. James Hymans, Charles Kroese, Gerrit Vander Schaaf and Kenneth Faber as vocalists and Mrs. Willis Meylink accompanist. Pall bearers were H. H. Huibregtse, Arend Olivier, Peter Van Oort, John Vande Berg, E. C. Reimann and Herman H. Van Engen. Kraai and Van Engen, Morticians, had charge of arrangements.

The large number of floral offerings at the service attested to the esteem in which the deceased was held by his many friends.
