Funeral services for Dick Smit, 79, of Doon, Iowa, who passed away Wednesday, January 19, 1972, at the Sioux City Hospital following stroke, was held Saturday, January 22, at the Doon Reformed Church, with Reverend Norman Menning officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Doon, Iowa.

Dick Smit, the son of Thomas and Mary (Stander) Smit, was born on July 8, 1892, in The Netherlands, coming to America in 1911, settled near Orange City. He married Bertha De Jong February 22, 1922. They lived on farms in the area and retiring in Doon.

Survivors include the widow; four sons - Thomas of Maurice, Iowa, Cornelius of Boyden, Iowa, Peter of George, Iowa, and John of Westbrook, Minnesota; a daughter, Mrs. Stewart (Nellie) Kuiper of Wyoming, Michigan; two brothers - John T. of Hull, Iowa, and Leonard of Doon, Iowa; four sisters - Mrs. Nick Heida of Raymond, Minnesota, Mrs. John Bouwman of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. John Dykhuizen of Fairoaks, Indiana, Mrs. Case Van Tilburg of Rock Valley, Iowa; 23 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
