From the Rock Valley Bee, August 8, 1930:

SIOUX COUNTY PIONEER IS CALLED TO REWARD

Joe Bogaard received a message from Orange City Wednesday telling him of the death of his uncle, Dick Bogaard. About a week ago, Mr. Bogaard, who is 81 years old, fell down stairs and was injured about the head. He was rendered unconscious and he failed to regain consciousness before being called to his reward.

Mr. Bogaard was a pioneer resident of Sioux County and has lived in and around Orange City for many years. He is a brother of H. B. Bogaard.

Funeral services were held Thursday, in the First Reformed church at Orange City. Joe and Kenneth Bogaard attended the last rites.

From De Volksvriend, August 7, 1930:

TRANSLATION:

Tuesday, August 5, at 9:30 in the morning, Dirk Bogaard changed the temporary for the eternal. In the night of Thursday on Friday [i.e., in the middle of Thursday night], he left his bed to go to another room for a moment, and then fell down the stairs. He regained consciousness, but was unable to provide any information. Since then, until the end, he remained in a more or less unconscious state. Perhaps the fall caused a concussion.

Dirk Bogaard saw the first light of day on 4 March 1851 in Pella. In 1873 he left for Sioux County, where on 16 Sept. 1880 he married Miss Adriana Jongewaard, who preceded him in death 5 Sept. 1925. Their union was blessed with 7 children of whom 6 survive, Jeanet (Mrs. Rev. J. W. te Selle) at Matlock, Arie at Hospers, Gertrude (Mrs. D. Sterrenburg) at Platte, S.D., Albert, at home, Nick at the farm, and Winnifred, also at home. He is also survived by 4 brothers, Klaas and Harm in Pella, David in Muscatine and Hillebrand in Orange City.

In 1918 the family settled in the city to enjoy a well deserved rest. Mr. Bogaard, although silent in nature, had many friends who, like his children and other family, were severely affected by his passing away.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at one-thirty at the house of the deceased, and at 2 o'clock in the Reformed church, where Rev. J. Engelsman will preside.
