SQUIRES PASSED AWAY TUESDAY

“Fred M. Squires, a resident of Union county practically all his life, passed away at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City Tuesday morning, April 6. He had been afflicted with diabetis[sic] for several years. Funeral services were held at the Anderson Funeral home in Elk Point Thursday afternoon, April 8. Interment was in Riverside cemetery at Akron.

Fred Milo Squires was born on a farm northwest of Akron on August 25, 1878, and so was past 64 years of age at the time of his death. He spent his early life at Richland, S.D., where he married Ada Belle Royalty in 1902. To this union were born four children. His wife died Sept. 1, 1935, and since then he lived with his children and at the Union County home. At one time he lived in Hawarden and he also made his home with his children in this vicinity at times.

He is survived by four children, Mrs. Vera Neenink of Worthington, Minn., Mrs. Ethel Crowther of Pasadena, Calif., Vernon Squires of Jackson, Minn., Mrs. Ada Van Hoffwegen of Hawarden. He also leaves one sister, Ethel Booher of Liverpool, N. Y., and a half-brother, Ralph W. Brown of Akron.

FRED M. SQUIRES CALLED BY DEATH
Life Long Resident of Akron Vicinity

Fred M. Squires, life long resident of Akron vicinity, died April 6 in a Sioux City hospital following a long illness.

Fred Milo Squires, son of Frank and Carrie Squires, was born August 25, 1878, on what is known as the Tremaine farm, northwest of Akron, in Union county, South Dakota. He spent his early life in Richland, S.D., where he met and married Ada Bell Royalty in the year of 1902. To this union four children, three daughters and one son, were born. For a number of years he engaged in farming. He was preceded in death by his wife September 1, 1935.

News notes in the Hawarden Independent show Fred Squires living in the Akron area in the 1910s, and the Squires family living and farming in the Hawarden/Chatsworth vicinity in the 1920s. His wife died in Hawarden in 1935 (see her obituary, posted separately).

The 1925 Iowa state census shows them in Logan Township, Sioux County: F. M. (47), Ada (44), Verg or Virg (daughter, 18), Ethel (16), Vernon (9), and Ada (8). His parents are given as F. P. Squires and Carry Cannon.
