Ann DeWit, 89, of Sioux Center, IA (formerly of Sioux Falls, SD) died Monday, October 15, 2018 at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, October 20 at First Christian Reformed Church, Sioux Falls, with burial at Hills of Rest Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5:00 PM Friday, October 19 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Ann Van Velzen, daughter of John and Henrietta (Van Oosbree) Van Velzen, was born June 22, 1929 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up there and graduated from Washington High School in 1947.

Ann was united in marriage with Arthur “Al” DeWit on September 1, 1949 in Sioux Falls. She worked as a Teachers Aide at Bancroft Elementary School for 21 years before retiring in 1991. Ann and Al moved to Sioux Center, IA in 2015.

Ann was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church and very active there through volunteering and with the Ladies Bible Fellowship. She volunteered with the Luke Society. Ann also volunteered at the Banquet, where she was honored as a Volunteer of the Year and helped establish the Backpack program. In addition, Ann and Al were among the families that started Calvin Christian School, now known as Sioux Falls Christian School. In her free time, Ann enjoyed reading and sewing.

Ann is survived by her husband of 69 years, Al; two children, Dale DeWit and his wife, Jeanne, Naperville, IL, Diane Bonnema and her husband, Vince, Grand Rapids, MI; a son-in-law, Tom VanDenBosch, Sioux Center, IA; ten grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Ann was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol VanDenBosch; her parents; two brothers, Cornelius Van Velzen and Chris Van Velzen; and a sister, Johanna Axtell.
