Practiced Medicine In Younger Years – Editor De Volkvriend 35 Years.

Dr. Henry Peter "Hendrik Petrus" Oggel passed away at his home in Orange City last Friday. Seven weeks earlier he had fallen and suffered a fractured hip. Complications set in which resulted in his death at the age of 82 years.

Services were held Monday in charge of Reverend Haverkamp, pastor of the Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center at 1:30 o’clock from the home and at 2 o’clock from the First Reformed Church, Orange City. Burial was made at the Orange City Cemetery.

Dr. Oggel was born at Axel, Zeeland, Netherlands on March 22, 1844, coming to the United States in 1855.

He practiced medicine in Michigan from 1867 to 1870 and in Pella from 1876 to 1880; Then he came to Orange City where he was connected with the N.W.C. Academy for five years.

It was as editor of De Volksvriend, one of the foremost Dutch Language Weeklies of the United States, that Dr. Oggel became known in many parts of the United States and the old world.

He acquired the newspaper 35 years ago and since that time had devoted his entire attention to it. For many years his son John E. had been associated with him in conducting the newspaper and taken much of the responsibility off his shoulder.

In the loss of their splendid husband and father, The Alton Democrat and its readers will join in offering deepest sympathy to the bereaved widow and children.

Dr. Oggel was married on February 10, 1889, to Miss Hendrika Van Bruggen, who survives her helpmate of 57 years.

The children are J.E. of Orange City.; Mrs. D.B. Ashenfelter of Boone; Mrs. R.I. Beaty of Sioux City, and L.T., Misses Wilhelmina and Adrianna, of Orange City. He is also survived by his brother. J. M. Oggel, and sister, Mrs. D.M. Welle of Chicago.
