Roger Owens was born on December 9, 1937, in Orange City, the son of Herman L. and Gertrude June (Owens) Mouw. He was raised in Orange City, where he graduated from Orange City High School and Northwestern College. He loved playing football. From a very young age, he also helped in the family business, Mouw’s Meat Market, in Orange City. He served in the Iowa Air National Guard, where he fought crash fires.

On December 6, 1960, he married Betty Joyce Huygens in Hospers. They made their home in Orange City, Hospers, and more recently, Frisco, Texas, to be close to their grandchildren. Betty passed away on November 27, 2017, in Prosper, Texas, after almost 57 years of marriage.

Mr. Mouw was a member of the American Reformed Church in Orange City and the First Reformed Church in Hospers.

In early years, he owned and operated a grocery store in Hospers. He then established, owned, and operated Mouw’s Super Valu with his wife, Betty, in Orange City, for more than 20 years. After retiring from the grocery business, he worked as a technician for Clearview Windshield Repair.

Roger was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed golfing, watching movies, collecting and repairing cars and guns, riding motorcycle and snowmobile, and telling stories. He faithfully attended his grandchildren’s activities. He was a devoted husband and father, and he loved his grandchildren and being called “Papa”.

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Roma and Kevin Westra, of Prosper, Texas; three grandchildren, Jude, Pétra, and Jada Westra, all of Prosper; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Larry and Marge Huygens, of Sioux Center, and Jimmy and Bonnie Huygens, of Orange City; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lorenz “Butch” Mouw, and a sister, Karen Mouw De Haan.
