Mr. Arnold Wallinga, age 79, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, August 18, at 1:30pm, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Steve Bierly will officiate. Interment will be at a later time at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is assisting the family.

Arnold Jay was born on August 18, 1938, north of Hull, the son of Harry and Grace (Shaffer) Wallinga. He was raised at Hull, where he graduated from the public high school. He also attended the Sioux Empire College in Hawarden for two years. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.

On November 27, 1964, he married the love of his life, Shirley Kay Nagel, at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. They made their home in Hull, where he was employed by Fred De Jong and Sons in Hull, Hymans Construction in Sioux Center, and Rock Valley Block and Tile.

“Arnie” was a lifetime member of the American Reformed Church and belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull. He was a Weblow leader and played slow-pitch softball for the Legion and Bonestroo teams.

He loved spending time with his sons and grandsons, especially traveling with them. He enjoyed nature, particularly fishing and hunting. He looked forward to visits from Katelyn Bouma and Kyzer Cook.

Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years; two sons and their wives, Kyle Wallinga, and his special friend, Megan Carter, of Maryville, Missouri; and Kory and Tressa Wallinga, of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandsons, Sam Wallinga, and his wife, Andria, of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; and Tyler Wallinga, of Maryville; a great-grandson, Corbin Wallinga; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Stoehr, of Grundy Center; Janie, and her husband, Larry Coe, of Ventura; and Donna Nagel, of Perham, Minnesota; a former daughter-in-law, Rita Wallinga, of Maryville; friends, Brian and Ashley Bouma; and nephews and nieces of the Wallinga and Nagel families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a beloved son, Kelly; three brothers, Harold Wallinga; Hank Wallinga, and his wife, Marie; and Donald Wallinga, and his wife, Verna; and his parents-in-law, Frederick and Grace Nagel.
