Mr. Elwin Herbst, age 66, of Maurice, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a private family graveside service on Monday, August 13, at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Elwin Wendel was born on May 1, 1952, in Le Mars, the son of Odie G. and Mary Anne (Bremer) Herbst. He was raised near Merrill.

On July 15, 1989, he married Brenda Kay Kuiken in Maurice. They made their home southeast of Maurice.

He enjoyed fishing, tinkering with cars, gardening, collecting anything Coke, and had a love for all things involving trains. He loved spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife of more than 29 years; three children and their spouses, Julie and Chris Wilken, of Milford; Bobbi and Mike Smith, of Orange City; and Paul and Jodie Wielenga, of Sioux Center; three grandchildren, Julia Wielenga, Alex Wilken, and Grady Wilken; his mother, Mary, of Merrill; five brothers, Harlan Herbst, and his wife, Vikki, of Le Mars; Marlin Herbst, and his wife, Myra; Darwin Herbst, and his wife, Susann; Melvin Herbst; and Norman Herbst, and his wife, Mindy, all of Merrill; his mother-in-law, Wanda Kuiken, of Maurice; and Brenda’s seven siblings and their families.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Brian Kuiken, in infancy, Bruce Kuiken, and Tim Kuiken; his father-in-law, Wilson “Bud” Kuiken; and a nephew, Randy Herbst.
