Mrs. Henrietta Vander Weerd, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, August 11, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church Chapel in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Henrietta Joan Vander Weerd was born on March 11, 1923, in rural Boyden, the daughter of Henry and Jennie (Kreykes) De Groot. She was raised in the Middleburg area, where she attended the Capel Country School No. 5. She graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City in 1941 and attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, earning a teaching certificate in 1942. She then taught classes to the first four grades in the Capel Country School No. 4.

On February 26, 1946, she married Fred Vander Weerd at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She was also employed at the Orange City Municipal Hospital for 21 years, serving as a nurses’ aide, ward secretary, and emergency medical technician. In December of 2005, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, where Fred passed away on August 30, 2010.

Mrs. Vander Weerd was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where she belonged to the Priscilla Circle and participated in Bible studies. She was also a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post Auxiliary in Orange City.

She enjoyed doing counted cross stitch, crocheting, making homemade cards, and sharing her benevolent spirit with the community through baking and comforting those in need.

Survivors include her three children and their families, Ron and Trudy Vander Weerd, of Ft. Myers, Florida, and their children, Brittani Vander Weerd, of Dubuque, and Christine Bellavia, and her son, Collin, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Brenda and Bill Cohn, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and their children, Matthew Tonjes, of Lincoln, and Megan and Christopher Bettel, of Redmond, Washington; and Daryl and Lorys Vander Weerd, of St. Louis, Missouri, and their children, Bryant and Lisa Vander Weerd, of Denver, Colorado, and Eric Vander Weerd, and his girlfriend, Deanna Barger, of Columbia, Missouri; a brother, Marvin “Bud” De Groot, of Morgan Town, West Virginia; and her special friends, Harold and Rose Vander Weide, of Orange City.

In addition to her parents and husband, Fred, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Betty De Groot.
