Many relatives and friends were here to honor the memory of the late Joseph “Joe” Oberman, whose funeral occurred at St. Joseph’s Church on January 22.

He was the oldest of 11 children, a plumber and tinner by trade, assisting his late father in the hardware store. He was respected and loved by all knew him, being friendly, modest and highly conscious to duty. He was waiting for his commission as corporal when he received his honorable discharge from the army on December 10, 1918.

Members of the local American Legion were pallbearers, namely Paul Diederich, John Tesch, Walter Ebel, V.J. O’Connor, Leo Reistoffer and Herman Schnurr and members of the Alton Post had charge of military rites at the cemetery.

Joseph Oberman, son of Mrs. Mary Jane (Schemmel) and the late Joseph F. Oberman of Granville, passed away on January 19th after an illness of long duration.

He was born at Granville on May 7th, 1890 and was 50 years of age on his birthday. He lived his entire life in the Granville vicinity with the exception of his service during the World War when he was stationed at Camp Pike. He was a member of the Granville Post; American Legion, and was buried with full military honors on Wednesday morning. Reverend Z. Reising officiated at the service in St. Joseph’s Church and Floyd Post of Alton conducted the military ceremonies at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

He is survived by his mother and the following brothers and sisters: Mary of Marcus, Mrs. George Kuhl, Moville, Lawrence, Edmund and Isadore at home, Munda of Sioux City, George of Remsen, Alvis of Granville, Mrs. John Mulder of Sheldon, Mrs. John Van Gronigen of Alton, who have the sympathy of many friends.
