From the Rock Valley Bee, January 24, 1930:

Mrs. F. Ykema died at her home in Rock Valley Tuesday morning [January 21] at 6:15 o’clock, following an illness of about four months duration with cancer. Mrs. Ykema was born in Friesland, Netherlands, in 1853, where she spent her early life and grew to womanhood. She came to this country about forty-two years ago, and for the past twenty-eight years has lived in this vicinity. Sixteen years ago she moved to Rock Valley where she resided until death claimed her.

Mrs. Ykema was a woman of good character, and was loved by all who knew her. She was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley, and was longing to go to her Savior when He called her.

She was united in marriage in 1880 with Mr. Floris Ykema, who preceded her in death over nineteen years ago. She is survived by three children as follows: Ike Ykema, of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Ben Ykema, of Ogilvie, Minn.; and Mrs. P. Ver Maat, of Hull. She also leaves 15 grand children and one great grand child.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, at the home at 1:30 and at the Christian Reformed church at 2:00 o’clock. Rev. J. Gritter, pastor, will have charge of the services.

A somewhat shorter obituary in the Alton Democrat, January 31, 1930, Rock Valley news, specifies that she came to America in 1888 and to the vicinity of Rock Valley in 1901. Her husband died 19 years ago, and 16 years ago she left the farm and moved to town.

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, although her husband Floris does.

Her death certificate has Mrs. Akke Ykema, widowed; born Sept. 20, 1853 in Holland; father Bena Roelinga; mother’s name unknown to the informant, Peter Ver Maat; died in Rock Valley at 6:45 a.m., January 21, 1930, of carcinoma of the stomach.
