Aged Resident of Alton Gone

Mrs. D. Vander Mark, pioneer resident of Alton, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Van Laar, at the age of 83 years and six months. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 9:30 at the First Ref. church, in charge of Rev. Euwema.

Mrs. Vander Mark’s birthplace was in the Netherlands and she was married there 56 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Vander Mark celebrated their golden wedding six years ago at their daughter’s home, where they have been living for the past fifteen years. Both of the aged people have been failing in recent years and a month’s illness preceded Mrs. Vander Mark’s death.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Jake Vander Mark of Sioux City, Mrs. Nels Ericson of Vermillion, S.D., Herman Vander Mark of Firesteel, S.D., and Mrs. Fred Van Laar Sr. of Alton.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Vander Mark, D. Mrs., died 1929, buried in Nassau Township Cemetery, Alton, Iowa.

Her death certificate gives her name as Mrs. Derk Van Der Mark, married, born July 29, 1846 in Holland; parents’ names unknown to the informant, Mrs. Fred Van Laar; died at 5:30 a.m. September 24, 1929; cause, “left bronchio pneumonia, hypostatic type”; contributory cause, ventral[?] regurgitation and auricular fibrillation, duration 2 months.

The 1920 U.S. census shows Derk and Maggie[?] Vander Mark, both age 73, born in Holland, immigrated in 1882 and naturalized in 1890, living in Alton with son-in-law Fred Van Laar and his family.

The 1910 U.S. census shows M. and Minnie Van der Mark, both age 63, married 38 years (i.e., about 1872), born in Holland, immigrated in 1882. He is a laborer, odd jobs.

The 1925 Iowa state census shows them as Dirk and Minnie Vander Mark, both age 78, living with Fred J. Van Laar and family; parents’ names, “don’t know.”

WieWasWie.nl shows a marriage between Dirk Jacobs van der Mark, born in Lekkum, age 26, parents Jacob Dirks van der Mark and Jantje Pieters Kuperus, and Mintje Hettes Hempenius, born in Jelsum, age 26, parents Hette Alberts Hempenius and Jeltje Piers Dijkstra; married July 5, 1873 in Leeuwarderadeel, Friesland.
