VANDERMARK, KUPERUS, HEMPENIUS

From the Alton Democrat, January 30, 1930:

D. Vander Mark, father of Mrs. Fred Van Laar, died Saturday at the State Hospital, Cherokee, where he was taken a few months ago. Funeral services were held in Alton Tuesday afternoon at the First Ref. Church.

His death certificate shows him as Dick Vander Mark, age 83, born in Holland in 1846, parents names unknown; died in the State Hospital, Cherokee, where he had been for two months, three days, at 1:20 p.m. January 25, 1930; cause, cerebral hemorrhage; contributory cause, senile psychosis; buried at Alton. (The Sioux County Cemetery Index just identifies him as D. Vander Mark, died 1930.)

The 1920 U.S. census shows Derk and Maggie[?] Vander Mark, both age 73, born in Holland, immigrated in 1882 and naturalized in 1890, living in Alton with son-in-law Fred Van Laar and his family.

The 1910 U.S. census shows M. and Minnie Van der Mark, both age 63, married 38 years (i.e. about 1872), born in Holland, immigrated in 1882. He is a laborer, odd jobs.

The 1925 Iowa state census shows them as Dirk and Minnie Vander Mark, both age 78, living with Fred J. Van Laar and family; parents’ names, “don’t know.”

WieWasWie.nl shows a marriage between Dirk Jacobs van der Mark, born in Lekkum, age 26, parents Jacob Dirks van der Mark and Jantje Pieters Kuperus, and Mintje Hettes Hempenius, born in Jelsum, age 26, parents Hette Alberts Hempenius and Jeltje Piers Dijkstra; married July 5, 1873 in Leeuwarderadeel, Friesland.
