From the Sioux County Index (Hull), January 18, 1928:

The many friends of John Roelofs and the Roelofs family here in Hull were shocked to hear, last week, of the death of John at his home at Raymond, Minnesota.

John graduated from Western Academy last year, and was working around at odd jobs, figuring on continuing his education further, next year. He was taken sick on Thursday with double pneumonia and died Monday morning, January 7th, being only eighteen years old. Besides his parents he is survived by four brothers and three sisters, one of the brothers being Prof. Gerrit Roelofs of Western Academy at Hull. John was a fine young man, with apparently a bright future and his death is surely a severe blow to all.

The funeral was held Thursday at the family church at Prinsburg, and was attended by a delegation from Western Academy, composed of E. Pals, George Pals, Nellie Pals, Miss Jonker and Wilbur Goris. Prof. Gerritt Roelofs was also present, being called there by his brother’s serious illness, but arriving too late to see him alive. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives in their great loss.

A news note about his death in De Volksvriend adds the names of those who came from elsewhere to attend the funeral: G. Roelofs and wife of Hull, Henry of Chicago and Sadie of Michigan, Delmer S. Roelofs of Corsica, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. H. Swiers of Bejou and Williard Swiers of Hull.
