From the Sioux County Index (Hull), March 1, 1929:

Mr. Bartman, who resides between here and Rock Valley, is critically ill at the Hull Hospital, suffering with an infected right arm. The poison is spreading so rapidly that it is almost impossible for the physician to do anything for him.

From the Alton Democrat, March 8, 1929, Rock Valley news:

H. Bartman passed away Wednesday of blood poisoning. Mr. Bartman pounded one of his fingers with a hammer by accident and it did not bother him for some time when blood poison set in. He called a doctor who packed the wounded member in ice but in spite of all care he passed away.

From the Hawarden Independent, March 7, 1929:

Word has been received here of the death of Herman Baartman of Rock Valley, a former resident of Center township, who passed away at the Hull hospital last Wednesday evening, February 27th, following a short illness from flu and infection of the arm, which resulted in blood poisoning. He is survived by his wife and several young children. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Christian Reformed Church. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.

From the Rock Valley Bee, March 1, 1929:

H. Bartman, who lives east of Rock Valley, was taken to the Hull Hospital Monday. He is reported to be a very sick man. A few weeks ago he hurt one of his fingers and thought nothing of it at the time, but later blood poisoning developed. He now is badly [illegible word], and his case is reported to be very serious. Mr. Bartman has many friends in this vicinity who will be sorry to learn of his misfortune.

Later: Mr. Bartman died Wednesday afternoon.

From the Rock Valley Bee, March 8, 1929:

Funeral services for H. Bartman, an account of whose death was given last week, were held in the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley Saturday afternoon. Mr. Bartman died at the Hull hospital last week Wednesday from the result of blood poisoning caused by an injury to one of his fingers a few weeks earlier.

He was a man who was well thought of and had many friends. He lived on a farm east of Rock Valley for a number of years. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of many friends.

RESEARCH NOTES

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Baartman, Herman, b. 1 Mar 1874, d. 27 Feb 1929, age 64 yrs 11 mos 27 days, Valley View Rock Valley [but the birth year would make him just short of 54 years old, not 64].

His death certificate has Herman Baartman; married, but wife’s name not given; born in Illinois March 1, 1876, age 53 years, 11 months, 27 days; parents Peter Baartman and Elizabeth Huisman, both born in Holland; died at 6:15 p.m. February 27, 1929 of meningitis; contributory cause, streptococci infection following accident; an operation on February 25 preceded his death.

FiindaGrave.com includes a photo of his headstone with birth year 1874 but age 64 years. It shows him born in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, parents Peter Baartman (1849-1910) and Elizabeth Huisman Baartman (1850-1919); 9 siblings listed. It gives his wife as Tryntje Cleveringa Baartman (1880-1945), married 1900, and lists 7 children.
