From the Sioux County Index (Hull), January 18, 1929:

John Horlings, who had been so very ill for several weeks, suffering with pneumonia, passed away Saturday noon.

John was a likable young man, aged 26 years and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He has been one of the assistants at the L. R. Kooker Blacksmith and Implement Shop here for some time. He is survived by his wife and one small child and by his mother, Mrs. Horlings and brother Albert, and by two half-brothers, L. R. and Lambert Kooiker, and two half-sisters, Mrs. W. Nooman, of Sheldon and Mrs. G. Oostenburg, of Primghar.

The funeral, which was one of the largest held here for some time, was conducted by Rev. Douwstra, of the First Reformed church at the home and from the church, Tuesday afternoon. The remains were taken to Sheldon to be interred in the family lot beside those of his father and brother. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
