Mrs. Muriel Vander Laan, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Muriel Jean was born on December 30, 1930, near Ireton, the daughter of John and Johanna Wilhelmina (Mouw) Van Binsbergen. She was raised in Sioux Center until her junior year of high school, when her family moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, where she was a charter member of the Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. She graduated from the Clarkfield High School and then attended Northwestern College in Orange City.

On August 15, 1951, she married Harold John Vander Laan in Montevideo. They lived in Ayrshire, Wall Lake, and George, Iowa, before settling in Orange City in 1961. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked part time at the Swing Set children’s clothing store in Orange City.

Mrs. Vander Laan was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and catechism classes, was a part of the Stephen’s Ministry, and was a Girl’s League sponsor. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sharing meals and treats with family and friends. She truly had the gift of hospitality

Survivors include her husband of more than 66 years; a daughter and her husband, Rebecca and Martin Koster, of Morrison, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Lori Vander Laan, of George; four grandchildren, Johanna Vander Laan, of Colorado; Abby, Seth, and Erik Vander Laan, all of George; six step-grandsons; two brothers and their wives, Warren and Ruth Van Binsbergen, of Montevideo; Howard and Mary Van Binsbergen, of Owatonna, Minnesota; and a sister and her husband, Fran and Wayne Vermeer, of Sioux Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Lyle Lee, David Joel, and Philip John Vander Laan.

Memorials may be directed to Northwestern College.
