JOHN W. ABBEY SICK ONLY A FEW HOURS--A RESIDENT HERE FOR MANY YEARS AND SUDDEN DEATH BRINGS UNIVERSAL REGRET

The community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of John W. Abbey, which occurred at the Hawarden Hospital about five o’clock Sunday morning. He had been about his usual duties all day Saturday and had worked hard all day. When he retired Saturday night he seemed to be in his usual health. He awakened about midnight suffering with intense pain and a nauseating sensation. Medical assistance was at once summoned but in less than an hour he lapsed into unconsciousness. He was removed in the night to the local hospital and preparations were made for an operation but the spark of life passed out before he could be placed upon the operating table. He never regained consciousness. An examination disclosed that his death came as a result of a stoppage of the kidney secretions with a resultant poisoning of his system.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in this city Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Reverend A. M. McIntosh, and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Members of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, of which he was a member, attended the services in a body and conducted the ceremonies at the grave.

John Wesley Abbey was born to Gottlieb and Ellen (Younie) Abbey at Manchester, Iowa, August 23, 1870, and died in Hawarden June 13, 1920, at the age of 49 years, 9 months and 20 days. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Manchester and was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Woodward January 25, 1894.One son, Dale Lewis, was born to them. They made their home in Delaware County, Iowa, until 1902 when they moved to Hawarden and have ever since resided in this community.

John Abbey was one of the successful farmers of this community. His fine farm, adjoining the city limits, stands as a monument to his tireless industry. He was a splendid citizen, highly esteemed by his fellow men, and universal sorrow is expressed at his passing.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by his aged father, Gottlieb Abbey of Hawarden, three brothers, William E., Elmer and Lewis Abbey, all of Hawarden, and one sister, Mrs. Jas. E. Walker of Hecla, South Dakota.

Relatives from a distance who were in attendance at the funeral were his sister, Mrs. Jas. E. Walker of Hecla; his father-in-law, H. W. Woodward of Lyndon, Kansas; and two cousins, Mrs. C. Wanger and Carl Zumbach of Manchester, Iowa.
