Services held for Jelte Talsma Saturday, April 17

Funeral services for Jelte Taisma,- 79, were held from the First Reformed church in Rock Valley, Saturday, April 17, with the Rev. Henry B. Poppen officiating. Jelte Talsma was born October 7, 1885 at Werdum, Friesland in the Netherlands to Johannes and Wietska Talsma. He married Agnes Steinstra, May 16, 1908 and they came to the United States in 1913 settling near Twin Brooks, S. D. where they were engaged in farming for five years. In 1919 they moved to Orange City where he did construction for the city. In 1921 he again resumed farming near Rock Valley from which "they retired in 1948 to make their home in Rock Valley except for short intervals in Michigan and California”. Mr. Talsma worked for the town until he suffered a heart attack while vacationing in California. He had just returned from there after a three month stay and was in apparent good health when he suffered another attack Tuesday, April 13 and died the following morning at the Rock Rapids hospital. The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross", and "It Is Well With My Soul", with Mrs. John Wissink at the organ.
Pallbearers "were Harry De Vries, Gerrit Doorn, Merle Suter, George Oldenkamp, Donald Doorn, Steven Suter, Harry J. De Vries and David Charles Suter.
Survivors are his wife, Agnes, one son, Henry John, Bellflower, Calif.; six daughters, Mrs. Gerrit Doorn and Mrs. Merle Suter, Rock Valley; Mrs. Harry De Vries, Hudson, S. D.; Mrs Henderina Beukelman, Bellflower, Calif.; Mrs. George Oldenkamp, Rock Valley; Mrs. Lawrence Huggett, Fair Oaks, Calif.; 22 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three children, an infant son, a son John, age 9, and a grandson, Larry Talsma, 12, at Bellflower, Calif. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery with Porter Funeral Home in charge.
