Mr. Jerry Mars, age 68, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, March 7, at 11:00am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Stanley Vandersall will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Jerry Duane was born on March 4, 1949, at Rock Rapids, the son of Jacob and Henrietta (Hofland) Mars. Following graduation from high school, he attended a technical school for masonry.

On August 15, 1969, he married Sandie Jo Van Den Berg at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He served in the United States Army from September of 1969 to March of 1972. Following his honorable discharge, they lived in Kansas for a year and then spent five years in North Richland Hills, Texas, and finally settled in Orange City. Sandie passed away on January 29, 2017, in Orange City, after more than 47 years of marriage.

Mr. Mars was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, both in Orange City. He enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, cooking, visiting with people during coffee time, helping others, fixing things, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his two daughters and their husbands, Becky and Kirk “Maazy” Maasdam and Stephanie and Jason Pottebaum, all of Orange City; five grandchildren, Brody Pottebaum, Blake Pottebaum, Josie Maasdam, Levi Maasdam, and Dylan Maasdam; six siblings and their spouses, Gary and Hendrine Mars, of Hull; Val and Fred Falkena, of Hospers; Darlene and Stan Ekdom, of Des Moines; Don and Audry Mars, of Hastings, Nebraska; Bob and Sue Mars, of Des Moines; and Randy and Wanda Mars, of Alton.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lige Mars; and three sisters, Gertrude Vande Brake, June De Vos, and Shirley Beth Mars in infancy.

Memorials may be directed to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post.
