De Groot, Stewart P. 1920-2018

Mr. Stewart De Groot, age 97, of Alton, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, March 2, at 2:00pm, at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Scott Bonestroo will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. Visitation with the family will be after 1:00pm on Friday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Stewart Peter was born on April 6, 1920, at Alton, the son of John S. and Minnie (Van Peursem) De Groot. He was raised at Newkirk. He attended the Orange City Christian School, the Newkirk Consolidated School, and Northwestern College in Orange City.

On December 8, 1942, he married Julia Marie Dowma in Alton. They first made their home in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was a supervisor at Boeing Aircraft. In 1945, they returned to Alton, where he was a tool and dye maker at Silent Sioux in Orange City. Later, he worked at Groschopp in Sioux Center. They spent 24 winters in Mesa, Arizona. In May of 2010, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Julia passed away on October 24, 2012, in Orange City, after almost seventy years of marriage.

On March 10, 2015, Stewart moved to Prairie Ridge.

He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as an elder and a deacon, taught Sunday school classes, and sang in the choir.

Mr. De Groot enjoyed bowling and shuffleboard.

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Sandra L. and Newsom Williams, of New Bern, North Carolina; his son, James S. De Groot, of Ontario, California; two grandchildren, Melissa Daniels and Michael Daniels, and his wife, Ann Kathryn; four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Caitlin, and Claire Dulsky; and Troy Daniels; a brother and his wife, Harold J. and Alyce De Groot, of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law and her husband, Nancy and Tom Perkins; and four nephews and a niece, Evan , Ellen, Tad, Tim, and Thea De Groot.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Luther Daniels; and a brother, Freeman De Groot.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the donor’s choice.
