From the Rock Valley Bee, March 23, 1928:

YOUNG LIFE CALLED

Melvin Van Otterloo, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Van Otterloo, died March 14, at Rochester, Minn., where he had been taken a few days earlier for medical treatment. The young man had been sick for some time and was taken to the hospital at Rochester for treatment.

He was born in Rock Valley and lived here all his life. He had attained the age of ten years. six months and four days. He leaves his parents, seven brothers and four sisters, who have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Among relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John S. Van Otterloo, of Sioux Center, Herman J. Van Otterloo and son Tony, of Hancock, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Grevenhof, of Bigelow, Wis.

A note on his death in the Alton Democrat, March 23, 1918, Rock Valley news, gives his parents as Mr. and Mrs. John J. Van Otterloo; his birth date as September 9, 1917; and says he died at the Mayo hospital following an operation for tumor on the brain.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Van Otterloo, Melvin, b. 1917 d. 1928, son, Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA.
