DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT

The following from the Emmet (Idaho) Index is an account of the death of a former resident of this vicinity, J. M. Shaw, who lived on a farm south of Rock Valley several years ago, and who will be remembered by older residents of this vicinity:

J. M. Shaw, a resident of Boise and Payette valleys for 32 years, died Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. C. Minden, of Nampa, after an illness of 12 days. The cause of his death was the flu.

Joshua Marshall Shaw was born in a log house near Mechanicstown, Ohio, nearly 78 years ago. He moved with his parents to Fayette county, Iowa, in 1866. On October 15, 1874, he was united in marriage to Mary J. Slocan at West Union, Iowa. To them seven children were born, all of whom are living. They are: Ruben E. Shaw of Emmett, Mrs. Gertrude S. Cragin of Tucson, Ariz., Nathan R. Shaw, of New Plymouth, Mrs. Henry Z. Johnson, of Boise, Mrs. C. C. Minden of Nampa and Mrs. J. L. Lane of Oakland, Calif. In addition to these he is survived by his widow, 13 grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters.

In 1888 Mr. Shaw moved with his family to Sioux County, Iowa. In 1896, upon the advice of his physician, he came with his family to Idaho, and was one of the first families to settle at New Plymouth. He took a very active part in the early development of the social, industrial, and religious life of the community. He and his beloved wife were prime movers in the organization of the New Plymouth Congregational church. In 1905 he moved to Boise, where he and his family resided until 1919, when he accompanied his son R. E. to Emmett, and made his home here until 1924 when he went to live with a daughter in Portland. During his residence in Emmett he was active. He was one of the founders of the Citizens Lumber Company and was president of the company from the time of its organization until some four years ago. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city.

During the early part of his life Mr. Shaw was a farmer and livestock raiser. Later he became interested in timber and the lumber industry. He was a man of lofty ideals and of deep convictions. He was a good and useful citizen.

Funeral services were held Monday in the church he helped to found in New Plymouth. Burial was in the cemetery here.
