Nancy Johanna Van Roekel Luchtenburg, 87, of Worthington, Minnesota, died of cancer on April 25, 2002, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Worthington. The Reverend Irwin Van Leeuwen will officiate. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Friday, May 3 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the church.

Nancy was born April 1, 1915, at Alton, the daughter of Anthony (Tony) and Jane (Nette) Vander Meer Van Roekel. She grew up, was educated and worked as a hired girl in the Alton-Carnes farming community.

On February 22, 1938, she married Leonard H. Luchtenburg of Orange City. The couple farmed near Orange City and Ashton.

Nancy enjoyed writing letters and during World War II she wrote to over 60 servicemen to make sure they got a "letter from home" every two weeks.

In 1950 the couple moved to their farm near Dundee, Minnesota. She enjoyed gardening and baking and she provided day care in her home. She was employed at the Fulda Nursing Home for nine years.

Len and Nancy were members of the Grace Gospel Fellowship Camp Board for over 30 years.

Upon Leonard's death on March 30, 1984,Nancy moved to Worthington. She volunteered at the Thrift Store and for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of American Reformed Church of Worthington and was active in its ministries.

Survivors include four daughters, Carol and her husband Dwight Johnson of Willmar, Minnesota, Harriet and her husband Mel Moret of St. Augustine, Florida, Norma and her husband Aaron Vano of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Judy and her husband George Liljegren of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister Leora and her husband Joe Mulder of Montevideo, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Henrietta Van Roekel of Rock Valley; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters and two brothers.
