From the Rock Valley Bee, February 3, 1928:

CARMEL MAN DIES SUDDENLY

T. Van Berkum died suddenly at his home near Carmel Saturday [January 28] while working around his home. He was in his usual health shortly before his death. Mr. Van Berkum had lived in this vicinity for many years. At one time he lived on a farm east of Rock Valley. He was about sixty years old and leaves a wife and children.

OVERLIJDENSBERICHT

Het behaagde den Heere van leven en dood Zaterdag, 28 Jan. 1928, van onze zijde plotseling weg te nemen onzen geliefden man en vader,
Teunis van Berkum, in den leeftijd van 58 jaar, 11 maanden en 18 dagen, na eene genoegelijke echtvereeniging van bijun 31 jaren. Zwaar valt ons dit verlies, dat hij niet onvoorbereid was om zijn Maker te ontmoeten, lenigt onze smart. [Followed by thanks to friends and family for help and sympathy.]

TRANSLATION

It pleased the Lord of life and death Saturday, 28 Jan. 1928, to suddenly take from our side our beloved husband and father,
Teunis van Berkum,
at the age of 58 years, 11 months and 18 days, after an amicable marriage of 31 years. Heavily though we feel this loss, that he was not unprepared to meet his Maker, alleviates our grief.

His death certificate has Teunis van Berkum, farmer, born Feb. 10, 1870 in Holland; parents William van Berkum and Grace[?] Bulesom[?]; died Jan 28, 1928; cause: heart failure, aortic insufficiency, “Man dead when I arrived.”

FindaGrave.com shows him born 10 Feb 1869 in Zuidwolde, De Wolden Municipality, Drenthe, Netherlands; parents Willem Van Berkum (1842-1907) and Geesje Boxern (or Boxem) Van Berkum; 5 sisters listed; spouse Jentje Juffer Van Berkum (1878-1959, married 1897); children Geesje Van Berkum (1898-1903), William Tunis Van Berkum (1900-1955), Gracie Van Berkum (1904-1905), Luke Van Berkum (1906-1976), Gertrude Van Berkum Bosch (1908-1991), Jennie Luberta Van Berkum (1915-1919).
