From the Rock Valley Bee, February 3, 1928, Doon and Vicinity News:

Mr. Herbers[sic] Howen, long time resident of Doon, passed away shortly before breakfast Thursday morning, January 26th. His death being due to a heart attack. Mr. Howen was 62 years old and had resided here for 36 years. He owned the K. T. Café here for several years and divided his time at the café and farm work. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his death one daughter, Phay, deputy postmaster, one son Ross. Five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at the house at 1:30 Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the Doon cemetery.

From the Hawarden Independent, February 9, 1928:

Herbert Howen, proprietor of the K. T. Café at Doon, passed away suddenly at his place of business early the morning of Jan. 25th from heart failure. Mr. Howen was on his way to the basement to kindle the fire when he became weak and tried to seat himself on a stool at the lunch counter, but he fell over dead. When Mr. Howen arose that morning he seemed to be in his usual health. He was 62 years old and is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter.

His death certificate gives his birth date as Nov. 28, 1866, in “Amercka” [presumably America]; parents Remer Howen and Johnna [Johanna?] Penning, both born in Germany; wife Anna Howen; occupation, retired farmer; informant Lena Burchenfeld of New Auburn, Wis.; died at 6:45 a.m., January 26, 1928; cause, “while at work felt faint. Sat down on chair. Fell to floor. Death sudden. Heart failure.”
