From the Rock Valley Bee, October 28, 1927:

Mrs. A. Vredeveld Passed Away

Mrs. Alice Vredeveld passed peacefully away at her home in Rock Valley early Friday morning, her death being due to the natural decline of her advanced age, eighty-five years, three months and seventeen days. Her children were called to her bedside a few days before her death.

Mrs. Vredeveld was born in Holland July 7, 1842, where she grew to womanhood. She was married in her native land to Albert Vredeveld when she was twenty-one years of age. They lived there until thirty-five years ago when they came to Sioux County. They lived near Perkins for several years, and eight years ago she came to Rock Valley to make her home.

She leaves to mourn five children, John who lives in the state of Washington, Albert of Rock Valley, Ben of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Lamka, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and B. Wyant of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, all of whom except John were here during her last few days and for the funeral services, which were held in the Old Reformed Church in Rock Valley Tuesday afternoon, and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery for burial.

RESEARCH NOTES

FindaGrave.com has her as Aaltje (Alice) Leutscher Vredeveld; born 27 June 1842 in Friesland, Netherlands; died 21 October 1927 in Rock Valley; buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley; spouse Albert Jan Vredeveld (1836-1877); children John Vredevelt[?] (1864-1938), Albert Vredeveld (1867-1940), and Berend Vredeveld (1869-1958).

The following biographical sketch is also posted on her FindaGrave page: “Aaltje’s first husband was Albert Jans Vredeveld; he was the father of her four children. Albert died in 1877 at age 41. Aaltje was 35 years old with the four children still at home. She remarried Jan Bazuin 18 Dec 1880 in Drenth. After her oldest son Jan moved to America (Iowa) in the late 1880s, reports of a new life and opportunity led Aaltje (Alice) and her family to move as well in 1897. All four of the children immigrated to America and lived in northwest Iowa, a thriving Dutch community. Alice lived there only to see her oldest son move to Washington. Little more is known. The grave is said to be in this cemetery by her grandson Joe Vredeveld, also buried in this cemetery. Her death notice lists her name as Vredeveld.”

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index under either Vredeveld or Bazuin. No Bazuin surname is in the index.

The Dutch marriage records on WieWasWie.nl show Aaltje Leutscher, servant girl, age 21, marrying Albert Vredeveld, laborer, age 27, on 19 March 1864 in Drenth; her parents, Berend Leutscher and Baudewina Jacobus Oosterbaan; his parents, Jan Geerts Vredeveld and Lammichje Alberts Stevens. There is also an entry for her second marriage: 18 Dec 1880, in Drenth, bride Aaltje Leutscher, same parents, no occupation, age 38, widow of Albert Vredeveld; bridegroom Jan Bazuin, age 38, laborer, parents Hendrik Bazuin and Hendrikje Stevens, widower of Henderkien Klein. There is a death record entry for Jan Bazuin, laborer, age 73, died 17 March 1916 in Beilen, parents Hendrik Bazuin and Hendrikje Stevens, spouse Aaltje Leutscher. It appears that Aaltje went to America without him.
