From the Rock Valley Bee, September 12, 1927:

J. P. MURPHY DIES VERY SUDDENLY
Was Found Dead in His Bed Wednesday Morning

L. Murphy received a message Wednesday advising him of the death of his brother, J. P. Murphy, who was found dead in his bed at his home at Geddes, S.D. Further particulars are not available at this time, but it is presumed that he was in his usual good health when he retired Tuesday night. He had just returned home Monday from a visit here in Rock Valley and his sudden death is a great surprise and shock to his relatives here.

Mr. Murphy is well known in Rock Valley and vicinity. He used to live here in the olden days, and since has frequently visited here.

Mr. L. Murphy went to Geddes at once and will return with the remains for burial. At this writing arrangements for funeral services have not been completed, but the services will be held in Rock Valley.

From the Rock Valley Bee, September 30, 1927:

DEATH OF J. P. MURPHY

The remains of John P. Murphy, an account of whose sudden death was given in last week’s Bee, were brought to Rock Valley last Thursday evening. Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s church in Rock Valley Saturday morning, Rev. Father O’Rielly officiating, and the remains were taken to St. Mary’s Cemetery and laid to rest beside those of his wife, who preceded him twenty-six years ago.

Besides other relatives, Mr. Murphy leaves one son, W. J. Murphy, of Sioux Falls, one brother, Lawrence Murphy, of Rock Valley, and four grandchildren.

Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Hogan, Mr. W. J. La Velle, Mrs. A. Guilleum, all of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Murphy and Leo Murphy, of Harrisburg, S. D., and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Murphy, of Sioux Falls.

Mr. Murphy was born at Wilmington, Ill. February 28, 1862, where he spent his early life and grew to manhood. He and his brother, Lawrence Murphy, came to Sioux County in 1884. They farmed together for a few years and then J. P. Murphy bought a farm west of Rock Valley which he farmed for several years, going from here to Geddes, S.D., where he made his home until his sudden death.
