Betty Barnes, 83, of Hawarden died Monday, Feb.27, 2017. The family is planning a celebration of Betty's life in the Alcester City Park on June 10 with her children hosting.

Betty Alice Mallicote was born Sept. 2, 1933 to Reaford abd Esther Mallicote of Kingsport, TN.

She met Kenneth Barnes while he was stationed in the Army and they married. In 1969 they moved to Alcester, purchased the local grocery store and changed it's name to the 3 B IGA. After 12 years in the grocery business, they sold the store and moved to Elk Point. Betty managed the Sun Motel and was the unofficial greeter for the city of Elk Point for 20 years. She loved her job and her gifts and talents served her well in this capacity. She was a marvelous cook and loved to entertain for large crowds. She was her happiest when she was having a family gathering. After her retirement, she moved to Beresford for two years and finally made her home in Hawarden for the last six years.

Survivors include 9 children, Don (Elaine) Lamarr, LaCanada, CA, Nora Ludwig of Hawarden, Steve (Mary) Sigman of Alcester, Desiree Berg of Knoxville, TN., Kenn (Sandy) Barnes of Alcester, Doyle (Crystal) Barnes of Beresford, Serena (Gary) Anderson of Hawarden, Nina (Tony) McNeill of Lansing KS, and Neal (Mary) Barnes of Alcester; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband; a son, David Lamarr; two brothers and a sister.
