Marjorie W. “Younie” Youngkin, the daughter of Elmer and Cora (Scott) Younie, was born Jan. 6, 1926 in Hawarden. She passed away on Dec. 28, 2016, at the age of ninety. Her ashes will be co-mingled with those of her husband, Lloyd “Red” Youngkin and interred at Grace Hill Cemetery. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for March 22, 2017.
Marjorie graduated from Hawarden High School in 1943. On March 19, 1949, she was united in marriage to Lloyd. For twenty-five years, she helped her husband with bookkeeping at the Coast-to-Coast Store and also worked at the Farmers State Bank of Hawarden. In 1989, she began doing volunteer work at the Hawarden Public Library, logging twenty thousand hours over the next twenty years.
Marjorie and several high school classmates called themselves “The Magnolias” and met for lunch and shopping whenever possible. She was also a lifelong member of the Associated Church and a member of the Prayer Chain for several years.
Her husband preceded her in death on July 12, 2015.
She is survived by son, Stephen “Doug” Youngkin, and his wife, Julia Alpert; and granddaughters, Siena and Ancelin; and by daughter, Rhonda (Youngkin) Gaylord, and her husband, David Gaylord.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Scott and Gene Younie.
