NOBLE KNUTSON DIES IN ACTION IN NORMANDY--FORMER HAWARDEN YOUTH WAS KILLED ON JULY 14--WAS SENT TO ENGLAND LAST MARCH AND TOOK PART IN D-DAY INVASION; MOTHER CRITICALLY ILL

Corporal Noble M. Knutson, until six years ago a resident of Hawarden was killed in action in France on July 14. Word to this effect was received from the war department by his sister, Mrs. Helen Westcott of Sioux City.

Corporal Knutson, who was 38 years of age, participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day, according to word received from him shortly after that time. Particulars as to his death were not divulged in the war department message, other than the fact that he was killed in action.

Corporal Knutson entered the services in March, 1942. He took his training at Camp Barkley, Texas and in California. He was sent overseas in March, 1944, and was stationed in England.

He was the son of Mrs. Bertha (Nelson) Knutson, who has recently made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Westcott, in Sioux City. He was born on October 1, 1905, at Vilas, South Dakota but when he was 8 years old, he came to Hawarden with his parents. He was graduated from Hawarden High School, after which he worked here for the Sjoxtrum Produce Company. Six years ago he went to Sioux City where he was employed by the Sherman Produce Company.

Corporal Knutson is survived by his mother, who is critically ill in the Lutheran Hospital at Sioux City; three sisters: Mrs. Westcott of Sioux City, Tillie Knutson of Hawarden and Lillian, who is in the coast guard and stationed at Anaheim, California.
