MRS. MARY KLEIN PIONEER VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK SUNDAY NIGHT ---BORN IN ST DONATUS, IOWA, IN JUNE 1863

Mrs. Mary Klein, beloved pioneer Alton resident, passed on Monday morning after a heart attacked suffered the previous night. Although not to robust health for the past two years, she was about as usual and had been especially well until stricken during the night Sunday.

Mary Haupert was born to Nicholas and Margaret (Krantz) Haupert in St. Donatus, June 30th, 1863, and came with her mother to Sioux County when she was still a small child. On January 20th, 1884, she was married to Jacob Klein, son of another pioneer family, the wedding having taken place at Sheldon.

She was a mother of twelve children, of whom ten are living namely: Mrs. Ted Huse (Anna) of Faulkton, South Dakota; Mrs. Nick Hansen (Margaret) of Alton; Sister Mary Verna of Worthington, Iowa; Mike Klein of Adrian, Minnesota; Mrs. Joe Schaul (Sylvine) of Hospers; Matt and Ray Klein of Alton; Mary, Lena and Christine, at home. One son, Bernard, died in infancy; another, Charles grew to manhood and passed away during the influenza epidemic in 1918. Mrs. Klein is survived also by 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; by one brother, Matt Haupert of Granville, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Ernster of Sisseton, South Dakota.

The family lived on the home farm east of Alton until twenty years ago when they moved to a comfortable and spacious new home in town. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Klein celebrated their Golden Wedding with a family reunion and open house. Two years later Mr. Klein passed on, surrounded by his devoted family.

Mrs. Klein was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Church. Her home, family and Church were the center of her affections but she was never too busy to do a kindness to one outside the family circle and her memory will be revered by many friends.

Solemn Requiem High Mass will be held in memory of the pioneer mother this Thursday morning at 9:30 o’clock. The Reverend Father L.W. Klein of Leeds, nephew of the late Mr. Klein will officiate, assisted by the pastor, the Very Reverend J.N. Neppel, Msgr. M.A. Schemel of Remsen and the Reverend Reising of Granville.

Sister Mary Verna arrived here Tuesday morning from Worthington and other member of the family and relatives are arriving as we write this, to honor the memory of this well-loved mother.
