After a short illness of two and a half days of pneumonia following the flu, death claimed the life of Laurens Grommers last week Wednesday afternoon, March 12th, at 2:40 P.M. Laura came to Hospers about two years ago from Chancellor, South Dakota and made her home with relatives. A year ago in February she entered the employ of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hoeven at Alton, Iowa and was still employed there at the time of her death. After the entire Hoven family had had a siege of the flu and Laura had helped to care for them she was stricken with the dreaded disease and being always thoughtful of others she did not wish to admit that she was not well and tried to keep up to care for the others until Monday morning when she went to her bedroom from which she never got up again. Medical aid was summoned and nurse Bertha Dyksterhuis went to care for her, her mother and two sisters from Chancellor, South Dakota came early Tuesday morning and remained until the time of her death.

Laura was born on the farm northeast of Hospers where N.L Youngers now resides and moved to South Dakota with her parents when she was three years old. But she always had a longing for Iowa and had made several trips to her relatives here and on her death bed requested to be buried at Hospers.

Funeral services were held from the home of her aunt, Mrs. B.J. Klein on Friday afternoon conducted by Reverend George Dowstra. Mrs. Edward Sipma sang “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” as it had been Laura’s wish to have that sang at her funeral service. Many beautiful floral offerings were sent to the house by friends to show the love and esteem in which Laura was held by her friends.

She leaves besides her parents, two sisters, Mrs. A.G. Grebin and Mrs. Herman Buss of Chancellor, South Dakota and several relatives in and around Hospers. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
