MATT KLEIN DEATH SHOCKS COMMUNITY

Funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Church Monday morning for Matt Klein, prominent Alton service station operator, who died in his sleep Friday night. His death was sudden and unexpected and shocked the entire Alton community.

Survivors include the widow, a son, Ensign Dale Klein of Jacksonville, North Dakota, a daughter, Mrs. Eldon Hatting (Diana) of Sioux City, one grandchild, Keith Hatting, seven sisters, Mrs. Ted Huss (Ann), Mrs. Nick Hansen (Margaret), Miss Mary Klein, Miss Lena Klein, Sister Mary Verna, Miss Christine Klein and Mrs. Joe Schaul (Sylvine), and one brother, Mr. Ray Klein. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Matthew Frank Klein was born April 5, 1896 in Alton. He served in World War I, including one year in France. On October 5, 1932, he married Margaret Streff of Alton and farmed East of Alton until 1934. On October 22, 1932 he lost his arm in a corn picker. In 1934 he built the Log Cabin Inn and Service Station, and he operated the station and tank wagon service until his death. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and the Floyd Post of the American Legion, which conducted graveside rites. Congressman Hoeven presented the flag to the widow.
