Earl S. Kiernan, retired Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Alton Savings Bank, passed away Sunday, September 2, at the Pleasant Acres Home in Hull. He was 84 years of age and had resided in Alton more than 40 years.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 5, at 1:30 P.M. at the United Presbyterian Church of Alton. The Reverend David Johnson officiated. Interment will be at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.

Earl St. Claire Kiernan was born July 14, 1895, at Corwith, Iowa. On August 17, 1914, he married Gertrude Leedom at Gordon, Nebraska.

Mr. Kiernan began his banking career in 1910 with the Toy National Bank System of Sioux City. He served in Hornick, Iowa until 1911, Osmand, Nebraska, until 1914, Aurelia, Iowa, until 1929, and Wakefield, Nebraska, until 1936. He then became associated with the Alton Savings Bank, where he served as president until 1974 and as Chairman of the Board until retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Alton Rotary Club, Mr. Kiernan was a former Treasurer of the City of Alton and a former president of the Sioux County Bankers Association. He had been active in the Iowa Bankers Association and the Alton Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include the widow; daughter, Mrs. Carl (Patricia) Oelrich of Greeley, Colorado; two sons, Max of Alton, and Dr. Thomas E. of Newton, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul, of Sioux City.

The family requests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.
