PETER KILBURG IS CALLED TO ETERNAL HOME--DEATH OF IOWA PIONEER OCCURRED SUNDAY EVENING IN SACRED HEART HSPITAL

The entire community of Alton was greatly saddened when on Sunday at 6:30 P.M. Peter Kilburg one of Alton’s most respected citizens was called to His Eternal Home.

Mr. Kilburg died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars where he had been for only a short time. Prior to that he had been about as usual and his friends and daily associates hardly realize that he was not well. His sudden severe illness and passing came as a severe shock, therefore, to those who knew him well.

He was born January 24, 1863 in Grand Dueby of Luxemburg, Europe. In 1866 he came to Spring Brook, Iowa, in Jackson County with his parents and in 1885 was married to Miss Mary Puetz on November 24. In 1901 he brought his family to Alton. His wife, four daughters, Mrs. John Hansen of Alton, Carrie and Mrs. James Larkins of Washington, D.C. and Sister Mary Georgia of Dubuque, Iowa and one son, Arthur of Washington, D.C., and left to mourn his departure. The oldest daughter, Mrs. P.J. Hansen and son Peter died some years ago.

Mr. Kilburg was a devoted husband and kind and loving father, a staunch member of St. Mary’s Church and also a member of the choir, and his untimely death is deeply regretted by all.

Funeral services took place at St. Mary’s Church, where Reverend P.J. Puetz of North Washington, Iowa, Mrs. Kilburg’s brother sang a Solemn Requiem Mass in the presence of many relatives and friends. He was assisted by Very Reverend F.J. Brune and Reverend Sturm of Granville and Henry Pick of Alton. Very Reverend Brune delivered an eloquent sermon and conducted the interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Besides his wife and five children is survived by one sister, Sister Mary Therista of Dubuque, Iowa and two brothers, N.J. Kilburg of Spragueville, Iowa and John Kilburg of LaMutte, Iowa.

The funeral was largely attended. St. Joseph’s Society attended in a body. For many years Mr. Kilburg had been treasurer of the Society. The Alton Democrat joins with a host of friends in sympathy to the bereaved family in their loss. Mr. Kilburg’s upright life was an inspiritation to his friends and to many a younger man who might well profit from his example. Mr. Kilburg was full of dry humor and ever ready to greet a friend with a little joke. His kindly nature will be keenly missed from the circle in which he knew so long.

The pallbearers were old friends: Messrs. Matt. Keilen, Otto Lieb, Nic Croat, Ferd. Mousel, John Minten and B. Kettler.
