Mrs. John Kern, 86, a resident of the Anton vicinity for 57 years, died Wednesday May 8. Mrs. Kern had been in failing in health for several years but was critically ill for the past two weeks.

Elizabeth Mock was born in Buffalo, New York in 1854 and came with her parents to eastern Iowa when a small child. The family settled at New Vienna an she was married there to John Kern on September 19, 1876. A few years later they came to Alton and farmed south east of Alton, moving to town 37 years ago. Mr. Kern died April 15, 1928.

Mrs. Kern is survived by nine children: Ernest of Taunton, Minnesota, Tony of Alton; Henry and Katherine (Mrs. Fred Reker) of Lesmore, Minnesota, Annie (Mrs. Mike Mueller), Granville, Minnesota; John of Council Bluffs, Elizabeth (Mrs. H.E. Collins) of Vermillion, South Dakota; Peter of Moville and Otto of Council Bluffs. She is also survived by two brothers and four sisters, by thirty-four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Reker of Lismore has been here the past two weeks caring for her mother. The other children came for the funeral which took place Saturday morning in St. Mary’s Church, Reverend Father Neppe officiated.
