Pioneer of Sioux County Died Dec 21 Funeral Held St. Joseph’s

Mrs. Henry Goebel of Granville a pioneer of this state died at her home Dec 21 from the ailments due to old age. The funeral was held from St. Joseph’s church Granville, Rev. J. A. Gerlemann officiating.

Catherine Heying was born Jun 26, 1841 in Germany coming to America at the age of two years, the family settling at New Vienna IA. She was married in 1859 to Henry Goebel and the union was blessed with 13 children, 6 of whom preceded their mother into eternity.

Mrs. Goebel with her family moved to Granville in 1901, settling on a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Granville, now occupied by J. A. Goebel. Later the family moved to the farm a half mile from town. She was an active member of St. Joseph’s church and a member of the Christian Mother’s society, the members of which attended the funeral in a body.

She is survived by her husband and the following children: Earnest of Turkey River; Mrs. John Wenke of New Vienna; Mrs. J. B. Klein Granville, John of Granville and Anna, Mathilda and Henry at home. Those who preceded her in death were Mrs. Henry Kokenge and Mrs. Henry Schnee, four dying in infancy. The brothers surviving are Joe of Winner SD, Henry of Salem SD and John of New Vienna.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were Joe Heying Jr. and Sr. of Winner; Mrs. Shroeder and Miss Ann of St. Leo MN; Mrs. Peter Nemmers, Arnold and Christine of Fulda MN; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schwaller and Mrs. Will Mery of Milford; Mrs. Nic Goebel, Mr. and Mrs Henry Goebel of Remsen; Henry, Peter and Mrs. Lena Goebel and children of Alton; Henry, John and Ernest Kokenge and families of Alton.
