Mr. Clayton Vis, age 86, of Hull, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, August 7, at 1:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation, with the family present, will be on Sunday, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at Hull First Reformed Church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Clayton Wayne was born on November 1, 1930, in Hull, the son of Peter P. and Johanna (Vanden Berg) Vis. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from Hull High School. He served in the United States military in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

On December 22, 1952, he married Gertrude Mae Donkersloot in Boyden. They made their home in Muldraugh, Kentucky, while he was in the service and then moved to Lakewood, California, from 1954 to 1960. In 1960, they settled in Hull where they operated the Family Clothiers and in 1978 the Family Bowl. He was also a rural mail carrier and a school bus driver for 28 years.

Mr. Vis was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday school classes for 46 years and belonged to the Men’s Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Hull Kiwanis.

He was a volunteer fireman for 32 years and an Emergency Medical Technician for over twenty years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years, Mae; three daughters, Peggy Koele, and her husband, Glenn, of Hull; Carla Koster, of Minnesota; and Donna, and her husband, Gary Van Hout, of South Dakota; two sons, Paul Vis, and his wife, Lora; and Marv Vis, all of Hull; thirteen grandchildren, Gregg and Garry Koele; Holly, Autumn, and A. J. Myers; Nathan, Derek, Amber, Robin, and Summer Vis; and Jamie, Kaleb, and Riley Vis; eighteen great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Arnetta and Mel Van Peursem, of Hull; and two sisters-in-law, Alma Donkersloot and Coralynn Vis Huff.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Peter, Anthony, Gerald, Harvey, and infant Christian Vis; a sister, Marie De Ruiter; and Mae’s two brothers and a sister, Ray, Ed, and Ilene Donkersloot.

Memorials may be directed to the Hull Fire and EMT Departments.
