Mrs. Bernice Van Maanen, age 91, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 9:15 at the church. Interment will be prior to the service. There will be a memorial service on Monday, August 7, at 10:30am at the Calvary Protestant Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Cory Griess will officiate.
Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the CHURCH.

Theresa Bernice, the daughter of Peter M. and Florence Hoekstra, was born on December 2, 1925, near Boyden. She was raised on a farm near Boyden.

On September 4, 1947, she married Bert E. Van Maanen in Hull. They farmed near Doon until July of 1981, when they moved into Hull. Bert passed away on December 15, 2010, in Sioux Center, after more than 63 years of marriage.

Since November, 2016 Bernice has lived in Sheldon, mostly at Fieldcrest Memory Care Unit.

She was a member of the Calvary Protestant Reformed Church. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and sewing. She enjoyed family gatherings and visits from family and friends.

Survivors include her seven children and their spouses, Florence and Gary Horstman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Marjean and Roger Buys of Hull; Brenda and Alvin Bylsma of Hull; Alvina and Marlyn Hofman of Sanborn; Carol and Marv Anema of Sanborn; Evert and Kathy (Louwerse) Van Maanen of Doon; and Jan and Wayne Vander Maten of Boyden; 33 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Brunsting, of Hull; and Dorothy and her husband, Alvin Mulder, of Palm Springs, California; two brothers, Ted and his wife, Harriet Hoekstra, and Henry Hoekstra all of Hull; a sister-in-law, Margaret Hoekstra of Hull; and Bert’s sister and her husband, Jane and Henry Hoksbergen of Hull; and two of his sisters-in-law, Christine Van Maanen of Doon; and Lois Van Maanen, of Hull.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters and their spouses, Eunice and Gerrit Brummel, Martin and Stella Hoekstra, George and Greda Hoekstra, John and Nelva Hoekstra, Donald Hoekstra, Ray Brunsting, Pete and Sharon Hoekstra, and Hillie Hoekstra; and Bert’s brothers and sisters and their spouses, Ella and Andrew Meendering, Roy and Grace Van Maanen, Mina Hoekstra, Ed and Alyda Van Maanen, Tom and Gerdena Van Maanen, and Harold Van Maanen.

Memorials may be directed to the Fieldcrest Memory Care Unit or local Christian schools.
