Mrs. Elma Hiemstra, age 84, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, July 31, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Elma Agnes was born on January 22, 1933, at Springfield, South Dakota, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Nagel) Mesman. She was raised at Springfield, where she helped on their farm and worked at the Perkins Grocery Store.

On August 31, 1950, she married Jake Clarence Hiemstra in Springfield. They farmed at Clinton, Wisconsin, until 1972, when they moved to a farm near Orange City. In 1982, they moved into Orange City. In addition to being a homemaker, Elma was employed in food service at both the Pioneer Memorial Home and Northwestern College in Orange City. Jake passed away on July 6, 2002, in Orange City. On January 1, 2014, she became a resident of the Pioneer Home.

Elma was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she had been a youth sponsor and taught Sunday school classes. She was a volunteer at Bibles for Missions in Orange City and enjoyed playing games, such as marbles, Fast Track, and Heartland Strategy. Her grandchildren often went to her for advice.

Survivors include her six children and their spouses, Dale and Cheryl Hiemstra, of Orange City; Gene and Sher Hiemstra, of Sioux Center; Glenda and Dann De Vries, of Alton; Kent and Laura Hiemstra, of Chancellor, South Dakota; Brenda and Jason Bertram, of Little Rock; and Marsha and Jason Bomgaars, of Alton; sixteen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother and their spouses, Edna Schut, of Clinton, Wisconsin; John and Barb Mesman, of Springfield; and Carolyn and Harlan Biesma, of Clinton.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Harlan Schut; and eleven Hiemstra brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to Campus Crusade or Bibles for Missions.
