Mrs. Darlene Van Es, age 84, of Alton, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, August 3, at 2:00pm, at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Scott Bonestroo will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Darlene Jean was born on November 4, 1932, in Sanborn, the daughter of Henry and Jennie (Wynia) Rosenboom. She was raised in Sioux and O’Brien Counties and graduated from the Sheldon High School. On November 6, 1950, she married Frank Van Es in Sheldon. They made their home in Newkirk for ten years and then moved to Alton. Frank passed away there on September 26, 1996.

In January of 2017, she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

In addition to being a homemaker, Darlene also worked as a telephone operator, a nurse’s aide at the Orange City Municipal Hospital and the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, a secretary at the Alton Chiropractic Office and at Foreman Tire in Alton, and she did upholstery work.

She was a member of the Alton Reformed Church. She enjoyed fixing puzzles, reading, knitting, and making denim quilts.

Survivors include her nine children and their spouses, Darlin and Dennis Vander Wel of Orange City; Juanita and Jeff Glass of Phoenix, Arizona; Fonda and Kerry Hartshorn of Coweta, Oklahoma; Franklin and Jeanne Van Es of Alton; Renola and Wes Van Ommeren of Alton; Melinda and Dave Top of Loveland, Colorado; Quintin and Tamie Van Es of Alton; Michael and Barb Van Es of Hull; and Jeffrey and Kari Van Es of Arvada, Colorado; twenty-five grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren, who called her “GG”, with one due in January; one great-great-grandson; five brothers and their wives, Martin and Karen Rosenboom, Marion Rosenboom, Roger and Nancy Rosenboom, Gary and Barb Rosenboom, and Lary and Viv Rosenboom; one sister, Ruth Lowry; one sister-in-law, Arlene Van Es; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter-in-law, Kim Hase; two brothers-in-law, Robert Lowry and John Van Es; a sister-in-law and her husband, Wilmina and Ed Cleveringa; and Frank’s parents, Gerrit and Elizabeth Van Es.

Memorials may be directed to the Alton Fire, Ambulance, and Rescue Department.
