From the Boyden Reporter, September 10, 1925:

SIOUX COUNTY PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

Mr. Fred Kruse, Sr., one of the pioneers of Sioux county, Iowa, and for 49 years a resident of this vicinity, died at his home north of Boyden, Tuesday morning at about 7:30 o’clock, after an illness of but one week, with intestinal flu. Deceased had reached the age of 85 years, 11 months and 23 days. Funeral services will be held at the home on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and at the St. John’s Lutheran church at 2:00 o’clock, with Rev. Boetke officiating. Interment will be made in the Lutheran cemetery, where he will rest in peace beside the grave of his wife, who preceded him in death some seven years ago.

The subject of this sketch was born October 1st in the year 1839, at Cadenberge, Hanover, Germany. He came to America in the year of 1876, and settled in Sioux county, where for all these years he has been actively engaged in farming, with the exception of recent years, when he was retired from the active farm work.

He leaves to mourn his death, six sons and one daughter; they are Henry, Peter, Fred, William, August and Ernest, all of this community, and Mrs. Ferdinand Miller, of Magnolia, Minn. He also leaves two brothers and one sister: Henry Kruse, of Boyden; Peter Kruse, of Sheldon; and Mrs. Schmidt, of Boyden; besides twenty-five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Deceased always enjoyed the best of health, and practically knew not what sickness was like from personal experience. He was taken ill about Sept. 1st and was sick for just one week, when he died peacefully. He was a man of Christian character and a true husband and father. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. The Reporter extends its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives in their hour of sorrow.
