This community was shocked last week when the news came that John Jepp had passed away at the McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls. Mr. Jepp was a former resident of this vicinity.

DEATH OF JOHANNES JEPP

Johannes Henry Jepp was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. At the age of seventeen years, he came to America, coming to Gladbrook, Iowa, where he worked several years. From there he came to Rock Valley where he spent several years. In 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Embrock at Hudson, S.D. They moved onto a farm near Hudson and later onto a farm in Plato township. In 1897 he moved the family to Worthing, S.D., and in 1905 bought a farm near Centerville, where he resided until Saturday, Aug. 15, when he was taken to the McKinnan hospital in Sioux Falls to try to get relief from his illness. He had been in poor health for the past three years. On Monday morning, the 17th, he submitted to an operation and that same night at 12 o’clock he passed away. The deceased leaves to mourn his death his wife and thirteen children, two grand children and four sisters.

He was a good American citizen and a loving father. He had reached the age of 60 years, 9 months and 19 days.

Passed Away at Sioux Falls

Johannes Henry Jepp, a former resident of Plato township, passed away Monday, Aug. 17th, at the McKennan hospital at Sioux Falls, following an illness of three years’ duration. He was taken to the hospital Saturday, Aug. 15th, and Monday morning he submitted to an operation.

The deceased was born in Hokstein[Holstein], Germany, in 1865, and so was past 60 years old at the time of his death. He came to America when he was 17 years of age and resided at Gladbrook for several years. He then moved to Rock Valley where he worked for a number of years. In 1894 he was married to Ann Imbrock at Hudson and for a time lived at Hawarden and later they moved to Plato township. In 1897 he moved with his family to Worthing, S.D., and resided there until 1907 when he moved onto a farm near Centerville where he made his home since that time.

He leaves a wife, thirteen children and two grandchildren. The children who survive are Henry, Emil, Arnold, Ida, Tillie, Emma, Albert, Edward, Lillie, George, Marie, Henrietta and Rudolph. Funeral services were held at the home near Centerville last Thursday.

FindaGrave.com shows him buried in Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery, Beresford, Lincoln County, South Dakota. A photo of his headstone shows his birth year as 1864. Spouse Anna M. Embrock Jepp (1877-1967). Seven children are listed: Henry A. Jepp (1894-1963), Emil W. Jepp (1897-1952), infant Jepp (1899-1899), Ernest C. Jepp (1900-1960), Ida Louise Jepp Cramer (1902-1988), Edward H. Jepp (1910-1997), and Marie Clara Jepp Moore (1916-2005).
