From the Rock Valley Bee, September 4, 1925:

RICHARD POLK DIES AT RAPID CITY

The following from a Quinn, S.D. paper will be of interest here, as Mrs. Polk is a former Rock Valley girl, and the little boy whose death is recorded, spent two years or more of his life in Rock Valley:

“Richard, the 11-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Polk, died at the hospital at Rapid City, last Wednesday, the 19th inst. The remains were brought here Friday night. The funeral was held from the Polk home Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, and burial was made in Mt. Hope. Rev. E. J. Fish conducted the funeral service, which was attended by a large congregation.

The deceased had not been very strong since about 6 years old, when he had a very severe attack of the “flu,” from which he never seemed to fully recover. Last spring he suffered a paralysis of the lower limbs. At first it was thought that he might recover, but he gradually grew worse, and about the first of May he was taken to the Methodist hospital at Rapid City, where he remained until his death. When taken to the hospital his condition was such that the doctors gave no hope of his recovery and his death was not unexpected.”
