From the Rock Valley Bee, September 4, 1925:

HERMAN WILTS, PIONEER OF THIS VICINITY IS DEAD

Herman Wilts, a former pioneer resident of this vicinity, died at his home in Le Mars, Iowa, last Friday morning, August 28th. Although he had been in feeble health for several years past, he was up and around until the Monday before his death, when he was taken sick with pneumonia, and died four days later, at the advanced age of eighty-two years.

Mr. Wilts came to Sioux county in 1889, and with his family settled on a farm south of Rock Valley where he lived until 1908, when he moved with his family to Le Mars where he resided until death claimed him.

Mr. Wilts was a native of Germany and was born at Schiverindorf, Hanover, where he attended school and grew to young manhood. He came to America in 1867 and first settled at Palmer, Illinois. He was united in marriage at that place with Mary Johnson on January 13, 1868. Six children were born to them, three sons and three daughters. Only the three daughters are left to mourn the loss of a loving father. They are Misses Tena and Katherine Wilts, living at home, and Mrs. Chas. Rasar, of Le Mars. Mrs. Wilts died ten years ago.

Funeral services were held in Le Mars Monday afternoon.

S.W., Le Mars; widowed, wife Mary Johnson Wilts; born August 15, 1843 in Schwerindorf, Germany; father John Wilts, mother Kate Zimmering; lived in U.S. 57 years, in Le Mars 19 years; occupation, retired farmer; died in Le Mars Aug. 28, 1925, 5:30 a.m., of pneumonia and flu; buried in Le Mars City Cemetery.
