Death of John Ver Maas

John Ver Maas, Sr., passed away at the Hull hospital last Wednesday morning, following an illness of about four weeks. Two weeks before his death, he was taken to the hospital at Hull, but he continued to fail in health until the final summons came.

Mr. Ver Maas was born in the Netherlands, January 23, 1860, where he grew to manhood. Thirty-three years ago he came to this country and located at Orange City, where he spent 16 years and then moved onto a farm near Rock Valley. Sixteen years ago he moved to Rock Valley where he spent the remainder of his life.

His wife preceded him in death eleven years ago. He leaves to mourn four children, Mrs. Nellie Wittebrod, of Rock Valley, Henry Ver Maas, of Doon, John Ver Maas, Jr., of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Gerrit Oldenkamp, of Primghar, Iowa, and eight grandchildren. Mr. Ver Maas had attained the age of 76 years four months and four days.

Funeral services were held at the home in Rock Valley at one o’clock and in the First Reformed church at 1:30 Friday afternoon and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery.

His death certificate has Jan Ver Maas, born Jan. 23, 1860 in the Netherlands; parents Hendrich Ver Maas and Nellie Meckelenberg; wife Adriana Levring [i.e., Levering]; retired farmer, last worked at this occupation March 1920, died at the Hull Hospital May 27, 1936, 6:45 a.m., of acute pancreatitis; contributory cause prostatic enlargement and infection; buried in Rock Valley May 29, 1936.
