From the Rock Valley Bee, July 3, 1925:

DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT

Louis Stengel, a former resident of Rock Valley for thirty years or more, passed away at his home in Canton, S.D., last Friday night [June 26]. He was past ninety-four years old, having attained that advanced age last April.

Mr. Stengel was born in Germany, April 22, 1931, where his early life was spent. He came to this country in 1849 and settled in Illinois, later moving to Dubuque, Iowa, where he worked at the carpenter trade. He later came to this vicinity, where he spent many years of his life on a farm near Rock Valley. Later he moved to town. Six years ago the family moved to Canton. His wife preceded him in death over a year ago. He leaves eleven children, most of them living around Canton, and 78 grand children and 44 great grand children.

Mr. Stengel was well known in Rock Valley and was well thought of here. Funeral services were held at Canton Monday, and the remains were brought to Valley View cemetery, south of Rock Valley, for burial beside the remains of his wife.

The South Dakota Death Index 1879-1955 calls him Ludvig Stengel, died in Lincoln (County), SD, 26 June 1925.
